SYNOPSIS:
The Mandalorian is back! Season 2 takes Mando to the Outer Rim in search of a fellow Mandalorian. He meets gambler and high-roller Gor Koresh to get information on the one he seeks only to be double-crossed and ambushed. Mando uses his Whistling Birds (small Beskar munitions) to even the odds and interrogates Gor Koresh Batman-style hanging him from a light post. Mando is surprised to learn that the Mandalorian he is searching for is on Tatooine, the city of Mos Pelgo to be exact.
Mos Pelgo is an old mining settlement ravaged by raiders after the fall of The Empire, a city so small it doesn’t appear on maps. Mando discovers that the Mandalorian seen in Mos Pelgo is actually not one of his kinsmen but a man named Cobb Vanth(played by Timothy Olyphant) who is the acting Marshal of Mos Pelgo. The Beskar armor he wears was purchased from Jawas.
Mando demands the armor back from Vanth but he refuses. Just when the two are about to shoot at each other the ground beneath them begins to rumble. Enter the Krayt Dragon. Vanth tells Mando that he has protected the town from Tusken Raiders and bandits using the Beskar armor he purchased trading Silicax Crystals to the Jawas. The enormous Krayt Dragon is far too large for any man or Mandalorian to face alone. Vanth agrees to give up the armor if Mando helps him rid Mos Pelgo of the Krayt Dragon.
The Mandalorian shows off his language skills and communicates with the Tusken Raiders of Mos Pelgo. Mando brokered a truce between the Raiders and the townspeople so they could launch a combined effort against the Krayt Dragon.
The newly formed alliance put their plan into action drawing the beast out and targeting its weak spot detonating a bomb under its stomach. The battle isn’t without its casualties. The weakened Krayt Dragon blasts the alliance with what appears to be acid from a higher vantage point. Mando baits the enormous creature into eating explosives and delivers the final blow from within.
The episode ends with The Mandalorian being observed by a man that appears to be the Bounty Hunter Boba Fett.

This was a great season opener but I don’t think it can serve as more than that. The Krayt Dragon was the focal point of this episode and a recognized part of Star Wars mythos but personally, I don’t think it was enough to carry an entire episode. The way the plot unfolded also felt very familiar and similar to other episodes of The Mandalorian. It was exciting but was it as iconic as Season 1’s first episode? As far as Season 2 openers go, The Marshal did its job in setting the scene for new developments. The highlight of the entire episode indisputably was the appearance of Boba Fett at the very end.
We can expect The Mandalorian to tap into even more Star Wars mythos in the next episode as Mando continues his search for one of his kind and The Child’s homeworld. Season one has set the bar very high so the next episode will really have to deliver.
