Who is Mephisto?

With the defeat of Thanos in Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War Part 2, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is in need of a new villain. Luckily for Kevin Feige, there is no shortage of big bads in Marvel Comics. Kang The Conqueror, Galactus, and Mephisto are just a few of the likely candidates to take on the role of villain for The Avengers to face in the next phase of the MCU. Since Doctor Strange and The Multiverse of Madness and Wandavision are on the horizon there is strong evidence that Mephisto is the next villain to take over the silver screen.

Mephisto is an extremely powerful demon that rules over the underworld. Mephisto is the epitome of evil, obsessed with power and dominating the souls of others. He once defeated Zarathos The Spirit of Vengeance and was able to capture him. He is responsible for creating the first Ghost Rider. Mephisto first appeared in The Silver Surfer #3 by Stan Lee, John Buscema, Joe Sinnot, and Artie Simek. He tried to manipulate The Silver Surfer by offering him the chance to be with his lover worlds away but The Surfer wisely refused the temptation. The demon was also an antagonist in The Vision and the Scarlet Witch Volume 2.

Mephisto’s main role in comics has been to seduce heroes with empty or twisted promises. As a ruler of the underworld, he is constantly making deals with Marvel’s heroes and villains. He has often been introduced as Satan or a Devil-equivalent. Some of his most notable interactions in comics have been his meddling in the life of The Scarlet Witch and his conflict with Doctor Strange.

If Mephisto makes an appearance in either WandaVision or Doctor Strange and The Multiverse of Madness it will definitely be chilling. Wanda and Vision are in an eerie alternate reality in WandaVision and Multiverse of Madness is said to be the MCU’s first horror film. Fans have entered a unique phase in Marvel Entertainment post-Thanos because now Kevin Feige can pull a slew of amazing villains from his hat to antagonize our heroes. Many Marvel projects have been pushed back to release in 2021 because of COVID-19, but never fear, ComicbookChuck is here to keep you updated on all things Marvel.
